how-much-farther-to-go:

“Let me tell you something about wolves, child. When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives. Summer is the time for squabbles. In winter, we must protect one another, keep each other warm, share our strengths.”
On the surface, A Storm of Swords is “high summer for House Lannister”, just like Tyrion says. But when you look closer, and compare their fates, it’s about the fall of the Lannisters and the enduring strength of the Starks. The Starks stay loyal at heart even after their parents’ deaths, but the Lannisters are utterly broken.
Sansa becomes a perceptive “player of the game” at the same time Cersei becomes paranoid and unstable.
Arya becomes a great warrior at the same time Jaime loses his skills as a swordsman.
Bran becomes truly wise and embraces his House’s magical legacy at the same time Tyrion becomes a hateful alcoholic and is disinherited.

So, I’m playing through DA:O again, this time with a impudent, sacrilegious Cousland warrior who named his mabari Maferath. So he’s going to defile the sacred ashes.

But I also really need Wynne in my party, because, you know, healer. Is there any way to keep her in my party? It won’t be hard to get Leliana to stay (since he’s a warrior intimidation will work out just fine) but as for Wynne… is there any chance of me keeping her? I’m on the Xbox so no mods for me.

Mandatory question mark —-> ?

The Wiki mentions a couple of ways to do it, but I haven’t managed to get it to work. I was originally going to leave it at that since I specced Morrigan as a healer, but then I remembered that I wasn’t going to be doing the ritual on that playthrough, so I’d be losing her at the end, too, and ended up not defiling the ashes after all. Which was annoying. I’ll be fixing it in the Keep.

Yeah- I’m not doing the ritual at the end either, so no mages for me :/ I’ll just have to try to do everything with Wynne first and save the Sacred Ashes for as long as possible.

Leliana, at least, should be easy enough to convince if you have her hardened. (As long as she’s not in the party when you do it)

The wiki mentions something about how if you do the mission before recruiting Wynne, then don’t go back to camp afterwards (go directly to the Broken Circle mission), then when you go back to camp afterwards Leliana’s conversation should trigger first, and if you successfully convince her then Wynne’s won’t trigger at all. But that’s what I tried and it didn’t work. (Wynne’s conversation ended up triggering first)

I also tried recruiting her first, then doing the sacred ashes quest, but her conversation triggers first again that way, too.

After that I was going to try the first method again, only going back to camp in between, but I was really tired of doing the mage tower quest.

Hmm- I thought I would be able to have her in my party- she’s my ranged rogue and I don’t really like rearranging my party because then everything gets messed up. Thanks for the heads up though- guess I’ll just have to bring Zevran and hope he can open at least a few locks.

It’s too late for me to double back though, I’m in the Deep Trenches right now and let me tell you I am not redoing everything just so I can keep Wynne. I’ll kill the archdemon without her if I have to. (to be honest, I’ve always preferred Morrigan- but I still don’t want Wynne to leave. The first time it happened, I didn’t realize that she would leave and I was devastated.)

Oof, yeah, I wouldn’t want to redo the Deeproads either.

Ha, maybe start leveling Zev’s cunning and Device Mastery skills now, just in case.

Yeah. I don’t mind the Deep Roads, actually, I think they’re interesting and big and overall pretty good, but I can’t stand redoing things in a PT.

ughh yeah. I’m going to have to build him as an archer though, which I never ever do. My warden is a dual wield warrior and I need someone on ranged damage… maybe I could take Morrigan instead? Decisions, decisions.

It’s always struck me as strange, though, that you can’t talk Wynne into staying, but you can intimidate Leliana into staying. I mean, Leliana’s the one who was a lay sister of the Chantry. Wynne’s just your standard Andrastian. I feel like Leliana should be the one who leaves no matter what. But I guess since she’s an LI, there had to be an option to keep her. (But since Wynne is my healer, shouldn’t I be able to keep her too? Sigh)

I like to think that Leandra really takes to Fenris.

Bethany and Carver are either dead or gone, and Hawke doesn’t need her anymore. But she takes one look at the skinny elf warrior hanging around her house and thinks THIS ONE NEEDS MOTHERING.

Like she is always trying to feed him. She doesn’t let Orana or Bodhan do the cooking, and whenever he comes around she just makes the heaviest stickiest Fereldan comfort food she knows and then bursts into the library where he’s talking to Hawke and says, "Makers breath Fenris you are too thin here eat this" and Hawke snickers under his/her breath at the look on his face.

Or when he is warming himself by their fire Leandra is lecturing him about dressing warmly for winter or he’ll catch cold and didn’t they at least wear a hat or gloves where he came from? Doesn’t he know you lose most of your body heat through your head? Here I made you this scarf and you had better wear it young man. And he sort of awkwardly drapes it over his shoulders and it looks ridiculous and just to please her he decides to wear it only until he gets home and can throw it away but it’s actually warm and comfortable and he ends up wearing it for the rest of the winter.

She exclaims over his bruises and cuts just like she does with Hawke and if Fenris doesn’t bother to clean his wounds because he isn’t all that inclined to take care of himself beyond the bare minimum she will give him a motherly sort of lecture. So eventually he just has to start doing it, because otherwise Leandra will fuss over him and that will be annoying.

(But actually it is not that annoying.)

(Actually it is rather nice. But he is not going to admit this to anybody.)

And in my Hawke/Isabela/Fenris OT3 when Hawke and Isabela are getting up to crazy shenanigans around Kirkwall Fenris is the one to get them out of trouble. He will talk Aveline into letting them out of lockup and haul them home in the middle of the night and Leandra is comforted to know at least one of those three has a good head on their shoulders and will get them home in one piece. She tells her noble friends that Fenris is the good influence on her barbarian of a child and Hightown is lucky to have him. They exchange long-suffering looks whenever Hawke gets loud and drunk and Fenris pretends not to be secretly amused by Hawke’s impropriety and Leandra pretends not to notice how much he enjoys all of this.

And even though Fenris does not remember what it’s like to have a mother he now has the memory of Leandra’s cool smooth hands feeling his forehead and putting him to bed when he gets sick and this is nearly as good.

Now I’m imaging Fenris’ quote “What does magic touch that it doesn’t spoil?” when he sees Leandra for the last time. About him racing through the streets of Kirkwall with Hawke, searching for a sign of her. Of Hawke asking of his mother, after. And him hesitating, not wanting to say that he just lost her too.

I absolutely despise timed missions, so I need a way to turn off the timer/death thing in Portal. So far all I have is a “buddha” console command that will supposedly leave me with one health, but I’m not sure how well that’s going to work. Anyone have any ideas? I’d like to do the mission, I just can’t deal with timers.
